What is a technical SEO audit?
A technical SEO audit is a review of how search engines crawl, render and index your website. It finds the issues that stop pages from ranking, from blocked resources and duplicate URLs to slow Core Web Vitals and broken structured data, and ranks them by impact so you know what to fix first.
Good content can't rank if Google can't reach it, understand it or load it fast enough. The same goes for AI search: ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity can only cite pages their crawlers can read.
What my technical SEO audit checks
Every audit starts with a full crawl, then a manual review of the templates that matter for your business. This is the checklist I work through.
Crawlability
- robots.txt and XML sitemaps
- Crawl depth and orphan pages
- Redirect chains and loops
- 4xx and 5xx errors
- Crawl budget on large sites
Indexing
- Index coverage in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools
- Canonical tags and noindex directives
- Duplicate, thin and parameter URLs
- Pagination and faceted navigation
Speed and Core Web Vitals
- LCP, INP and CLS on real-user data
- Server response time (TTFB)
- Image, CSS and JavaScript weight
- Caching and CDN setup
More on this: Core Web Vitals check and fix.
Site architecture
- URL structure and hierarchy
- Internal linking and anchor text
- Breadcrumbs and navigation
- hreflang for multilingual sites
Structured data
- Schema markup validity
- Rich result eligibility
- Organization, Product, Article and FAQ markup
- Entity signals for AI search
Rendering, mobile and security
- JavaScript rendering and hidden content
- Mobile-first parity
- HTTPS, mixed content and security headers
- AI crawler access (Googlebot, Bingbot, GPTBot)
What's included in a technical SEO audit
Automated tools list hundreds of warnings and leave you to guess which ones matter. My audit tells you what to fix, in what order, and why.
Want to see the format first? Ask for an anonymized sample report.
- Prioritized fix list: every issue rated critical, high or medium, with its estimated impact
- Clear explanations: what's wrong, why it matters and exactly how to fix it
- Developer-ready tickets: URLs, examples and acceptance criteria your team can act on
- Walkthrough call: 45 minutes to go through the findings and answer questions
- Optional implementation: I can fix the issues myself or review your developers' changes
SEO tool report vs technical SEO audit
Tools like Screaming Frog, PageSpeed Insights and Google Search Console are where an audit starts, not where it ends.
| Automated tool report | Technical SEO audit | |
|---|---|---|
| Finds technical issues | Yes | Yes |
| Ranks issues by business impact | No | Yes |
| Checks JavaScript rendering manually | Partly | Yes |
| Explains why and how to fix | Generic | Specific to your site |
| Covers AI search readiness | No | Yes |
| Implementation support | No | Yes |
A technical SEO consultant, not an agency queue.
Most technical SEO services are sold by agencies: a senior person on the sales call, a junior running the crawl. With me, the technical SEO expert you talk to is the one who audits your site and fixes the issues.
I've spent 10+ years on high-traffic international websites, most recently as CMO at Reflector Media (Windows Report, MSPowerUser, The Mac Observer), so I read technical issues in terms of traffic and revenue, not just warnings.
- Technical SEO audit: a one-off, full review with a prioritized fix list
- Technical SEO consulting: hourly sessions for strategy, migrations or a second opinion
- Implementation: I fix the issues in your CMS, code or server configuration
- Ongoing technical SEO services: monthly monitoring so new issues are caught before they cost traffic
- Working with your team: developer-ready tickets and code review for in-house or agency developers
Who needs a technical SEO audit?
A technical audit pays off most when the site is large, complex or changing.
- E-commerce stores: faceted navigation, product variants and thousands of URLs are where technical problems hide
- Content and publisher sites: crawl budget, duplicate archives and Core Web Vitals at scale
- Sites after a traffic drop: after a core update or an unexplained loss of rankings
- Before and after a migration: redesigns, platform changes and domain moves
- Multilingual sites: hreflang, regional URLs and duplicate content across languages
How the technical SEO audit works
A technical SEO audit has four steps: data collection, manual review, a prioritized report and a walkthrough of the findings.
- 01
Crawl and data
The audit starts with a full crawl of your website. I compare the crawl with data from Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and real-user Core Web Vitals, to see the site the way search engines see it.
- 02
Manual review
A crawler finds patterns, not causes. I review the key page templates by hand, such as the homepage, category, product and article pages, to confirm which issues are real and why they happen.
- 03
Prioritized report
Each issue gets a priority based on its impact on rankings and the effort needed to fix it. The report explains what is wrong, which URLs are affected and how to fix it.
- 04
Walkthrough and fixes
We go through the findings on a call. Your developers can implement the fixes, or I can help with them, depending on your setup.
How much does a technical SEO audit cost?
Base price for sites up to 100 pages. Larger sites, e-commerce and multilingual setups are quoted after a quick look at the site.
