The problem
The store had a working Shopify site, but online sales were low and no SEO work had ever been done. Competitors ranked for the client's searches, including searches for the brand name. For the broadest local search, the town name plus "flowers", the store was not where it should be.
Where I looked first
For a local business, Google and its AI Overviews first need to know which business this is: its name, location, category and what it sells. If that information is missing or contradictory, more content and more links won't fix it. So the audit started there.
Broken schema markup
The structured data did not describe the business and its products correctly, so Google could not rely on it.
Incomplete Knowledge Graph information
Google had only partial information about the business as an entity.
A weak Google Business Profile
The profile did not give Google a strong, complete signal for local searches.
No Open Graph tags
Pages had no proper title, description or image for previews when shared.
What I did
Fixed the schema markup
The structured data was rebuilt correctly, so Google can read the business, its location and its products directly from the site.
Completed the Knowledge Graph information
The business information Google uses to understand who the store is was filled in and made consistent.
Strengthened the Google Business Profile
The profile was improved so it sends a clear, complete local signal that matches the website.
Added Open Graph tags
Every page got proper Open Graph meta tags, so it shows correctly when shared.
The result
11 days after the fixes, for the broadest local search (the town name plus "flowers"), the store appears as the first recommendation in Google's AI Overview and as the #1 organic result.
The project is still ongoing. The next steps build on this base, but the main point is already clear: the fastest results came from fixing what Google knew about the business, not from producing more pages.
- Competitors ranked for the brand name
- Broken schema, incomplete entity data
- Weak Google Business Profile
- #1 recommendation in the AI Overview
- #1 organic for the main local search
- Correct schema, Knowledge Graph and profile
- Recommended by ChatGPT and Gemini for the main searches
Recommended by ChatGPT and Gemini
The same fixes worked outside Google too. I took the store's most important searches from Search Console and tested them in ChatGPT and Gemini. For every one of them, the store shows up among the recommendations, often with prices, opening hours and a direct product link, taken from the site's structured data.

The client is framed. Name, address and phone number are hidden.
This is GEO in practice: an AI assistant doesn't recommend a business because it was asked to, but because it can clearly identify it and trusts its data. Structured data, the Knowledge Graph and the Google Business Profile do exactly that.
What made the difference
Know where to look
For local searches and AI answers, the entity data matters before content and links.
Analyze before acting
The audit showed the real gaps, so no time went into work that would not move the result.
Start where it counts
Fixing the foundation first brought results in 11 days, not months.
